a new business.
Proceed with caution. While 20/20 DataShed is flexibile and has many features, it's important that you have a clear and sensible business plan and understand exactly how 20/20 DataShed may benefit your new business. 20/20 DataShed (or any web site for that matter) is not a turn-key-instant-money-maker; it requires diligence and careful planning.
The inventory managed by 20/20 DataShed will be...
a significant portion of your web site's total content. 20/20 DataShed may be accompanied by a few other pages but your inventory is the main attraction.
Great! 20/20 DataShed combines many features that will (hopefully) serve your purpose well. Your visitors can search or browse the contents with ease, and your "agents" (or "users") can maintain their own content online.
Many of our customers use our products to organize and display the main attractions and supplement that content only as much as necessary. For example, real estate sites, and autombile dealerships.
a small portion of your web site's total content. You will combine 20/20 DataShed with other products, tools, and a significant amount of other information.
Great! 20/20 DataShed can be integrated with other areas of your web site by carefully planning your navigation and links. For example, 20/20 DataShed might be used to manage a library of sheet music on a university's web site (which would obviously contain many other features for students and faculty).
For experienced (and technically capable) users, 20/20 DataShed's data and interfaces can be shared with other applications or even with other web sites.
You would like to use 20/20 DataShed to...
build a web site for your own company and its employees and it will not be necessary to charge your users a fee to list items on your web site and enjoy its features.
Great! This is exactly what 20/20 DataShed is intended for. We are confident that you will find 20/20 DataShed's features helpful and easy-to-use.
build a FSBO (For Sale By Owner) site or classified ads site and you will charge your users a fee to list items (and perhaps to utilize other featuers) on your web site.
20/20 DataShed does not have "built-in" features which provide interaction with online payment services or payment gateways.
However, many customers have incorpated our products into such business models. These installations usually fall into one of the following types:
20/20 DataShed source code remains unchanged and all payments and related management/accounting is performed manually or by other software. In these cases, it is possible to configure 20/20 DataShed in such a way that new user accounts and new items must be authorized manually. For example:
After a new user/seller/agent signs up for an account,
the administrator (you) can send them by email or direct them to a page on your web site which outlines their payment options.
Once the customer has paid, the administrator authorizes the account and sets a limit on how many active listings the new user can create on your web site.
If the customer wishes to create additional items or listings, then the payment can be repeated (manually) and the administrator can manually increase the user's limit.
While this method requires manual administration, it is the method we recommended to most customers.
20/20 DataShed source code is modified as necessary to interact directly with a payment service (such as PayPal) or payment gateway (such as Verisign). For example:
As a new user/seller/agent signs up for an account,
a list of 'products' or 'options' can be selected and calculated and
the user's credit card information can be passed to the payment gateway.
Upon a successful transaction, the user can be granted immediate access to their account and their item limit can be set automatically.
This method requires significant changes to the product's source code and we do not recommend it. Doing so will negate our license agreement, end our technical support obligations, and prevent you from smoothly installing 20/20 DataShed upgrades in the future.
The items in your inventory managed by 20/20 DataShed will be...
for display or informational purposes only (as in a classic car club or library).
Great! This is exactly what 20/20 DataShed is intended for. We are confident that you will find 20/20 DataShed's features helpful and easy-to-use.
for display online, and for sale offline (as in real estate or typical car dealerships).

for sale online.
20/20 DataShed is not a "shopping cart". If your business demands that your inventory be available online and your visitors must be able to select items (like adding them to a shopping cart), calculate the total cost of their order, and pay online, then we recommend you consider investigating other software that is specifically designed for such purposes.
However, with a little ingenuity it is possible to integrate other shopping cart applications (such as the PayPal shopping cart) with 20/20 DataShed. For example, you might use one of the available fields (for each item) to store the PayPal button HTML code. This way, your users can click on the button associated with an item and the PayPal service will manage the shopping cart and credit card transaction!
Your decision may depend on the size and 'type' of your inventory, how often your inventory changes, and whether or not you are famiiar with HTML and payment services. If your answers to these conditions are: "lots", "often", and "not very familiar" then we would recommend you investigate true shopping cart software for your online business.
